Combicore inlay tubes are perfectly convenient for magnesium cast
Innovative applications and consequent lightweight construction possible
The 68th conference of the International Magnesium Association (IMA) took place in Prague this year. Numerous experts were discussing new products as well as technologies and exchanged experiences in handling of magnesium. During the 4 days event Drahtzug Stein combicore presented its filled and therefore highly stable inlay tubes for foundries to a very interested audience. Channels for oil, water and other cooling liquids in cast pieces can be realized with these tubes.
Combicore inlay tubes offer numerous benefits with magnesium cast: The filled aluminum tubes have a coefficient of thermal expansion which equals extensively the ambient magnesium cast. The core casing remains in the cast piece after drawing the mold. Furthermore, the core follows the actually needed channel outline which saves alloy cast and makes the realization of remarkably lighter components possible. It saves general process steps at the same time, for example metal-cutting drilling. This reduces the fire risk which is especially high with magnesium and the tooling wear to a minimum. Pipes that have been installed externally up to now can be laid in the cast piece itself and molded reliably.
The advantages of the combicore inlay tubes also benefit the end user of the automotive industry. The running operation is quiet and leads to a reasonable consumption. This saves resources and also money.
The presentations given during the conference impressively documented that magnesium pieces can be considerably lighter than comparable cast pieces from aluminum and steel. While aluminum is already two-thirds lighter than steel, the switch to magnesium can save another quarter of weight. There are no problems known because of contact corrosion between the combicore aluminum tube and the magnesium cast. The oxide layer on top of the aluminum tube is normally not removed.
"Magnesium is active and the material for the future", so the closing words of the moderator. Drahtzug Stein combicore provides inlay tubes for innovative and modern applications. More information can be found through IMA at www.intlmag.org. The next conference will be held in San Francisco, USA in May 2012.
