Combicore casting cores receive material efficiency award 2010
Stable inlay tubes of aluminum save energy and resources
In the course of the conference „With resource efficiency on the road to success - Praxis and research show the way“ in Berlin on November 17th Drahtzug Stein combicore was awarded for its creative and innovative ideas in the field of casting technology. The price which is worth 10,000 € was awarded at the Federal Ministry for Economics and Technology (BMWi) in Berlin in front of more than 100 conference participants.
„Those who produce efficiently will win!“ emphazied Jochen Homann, State Secretary in BMWi. Material efficiency pays off after a short period of time. Raw and operating materials can be permanently saved with intelligent solutions. „This creates considerable competitive advantages", so says Homann.
Drahtzug Stein combicore produces innovative cores for foundries in Altleiningen. With these inlay tubes oil, water or cooling channels in different cast pieces like engine blocks or transmission casings can be built. The compressed filling provides stability in the tube during the casting process. This makes it now possible to use aluminum tubes which would deform without the filling.
Filled combicore inlay tubes are drawn through a cavity, bent to required geometry and recasted further with pressing if needed. After founding the ecological molding material is removed environmentally and resource friendly. A wire helix in the tube can support this process.
Drahtzug Stein combicore manufactured aluminum tubes offer numerous competitive advantages to their customers:
The tube follows the component geometry and makes a near end outline casting with considerable material savings possible. This allows constructing innovative and very light cast pieces as well as the realizing a consequent light-weight construction.
The tubes match to the cast and have a comparable coefficient of thermal expansion. At the same time the final processing of cast pieces is easier as the aluminum tube is softer than steel tubes. This minimizes the effort, prevents tools from damage and reduces use of energy.
Combicore inlay tubes are a patented world first and is convenient for aluminum pressure casting, magnesium casting or other casting processes.

Besides Drahtzug Stein combicore three other companies as well as the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology were awarded for their creative and innovative ideas.
